Portraiture: Laura Tippenhauer
Laura is my beautiful friend, an incredible artist, musician, mother, wife, busy woman. These are from a recent trip to visit her in Hamburg. We’ve been threatening to do a shoot together for a long time and finally got our shit together.
This was a great morning in her home, taking time for some much needed creative play. I was shooting with 4 cameras so there’s a mix of digital, medium format and 35mm film.
You know when life likes to chuck other people’s shit at you sometimes and the best thing to do is reach for the opposite? This was one of those times. Shoutout to Toby, Laura’s husband, for offering to cycle across Hamburg to pick us up some food after we’d stayed out late making a nuisance of ourselves and enjoying the company in a bunch of bars. Pals who know how to look after you when you need it are the greatest. Anyways, that’s not really got much to do with these photos except to say I was full of dopamine (and chips) when I made them and that’s where I like to be.
I love working like this, where there’s a little more time than trying to grab a few portraits as part of a bigger event, when we can just take some time to make things and try out ideas. I’ve some more portrait sessions lined up for March, shooting digital, 120 and 35mm so long as I can get my hands on the film. I’m looking forward to collaborating one-on-one and hoping the alchemy works in our favour. A couple of my film cameras are a bit temperamental, you never know what you’ll get, if anything, which keeps me on my toes but usually works out to be my favourite magic.
